The Critical Chain System is a project management paradigm derived from the Theory of Constraints (TOC). It views a project as a "physical chain" where the linkages between departments (Engineering, Purchasing, Production) are as vital as the links themselves.

• The Flow of Work: A project is a sequence of dependent steps. The performance of the whole is governed by the "weakest link"—the constraint. Improving a non-constraint link is a strategic waste of resources.
• The Role of Constraints: The constraint determines the system’s maximum throughput. In projects, this is the "Critical Chain": the longest sequence of dependent steps, considering both task and resource dependencies.
